Candle Making

I’m new to candle making. Where should I start?

A starter kit is a simple way to begin. It provides the main materials you need while helping you understand the basic candle making process.

We also recommend reading our candle making guides before beginning your first project.

How much fragrance oil should I use?

For many candles and wax melts, fragrance oil is used at approximately 6% to 10% of the wax weight.

The correct amount depends on the wax, fragrance oil, product type, and IFRA guidance. Always check the wax manufacturer’s maximum fragrance load and perform your own testing.

Which wax should I use for wax melts?

Pillar wax is usually a suitable choice because it is designed to release from molds more easily.

Soy pillar wax is popular for plant based wax melts, while paraffin pillar wax is often selected for strong fragrance performance.

Which wick should I use?

The correct wick depends on several factors, including:

  • The wax type
  • The container diameter
  • The fragrance load
  • The fragrance oil
  • The use of color or additives

Use the wick guide on the relevant product page as a starting point. Always perform a complete burn test before selling a finished candle.

How much wax does my container hold?

Fill the container with water and measure the water volume in milliliters. Multiply that measurement by approximately 0.8 to estimate the required wax weight in grams.

For example, a container that holds 100 ml of water may require approximately 80 g of wax.

This is only an estimate. The final amount may vary depending on the wax and fragrance load.

Why isn’t my candle burning properly?

Candle performance can be affected by:

  • An incorrect wick size
  • Too much fragrance oil
  • The pouring temperature
  • The wax type
  • The container size
  • The cooling and curing conditions

Test one change at a time and keep clear records of each test batch.

Do I need product liability insurance?

Product liability insurance is strongly encouraged if you sell candles, wax melts, or other home fragrance products. Some retailers and online marketplaces may also require it.

Speak with a qualified insurance provider about the coverage required for your specific business.

Home Fragrance

How do I make a reed diffuser?

Reed diffusers commonly use approximately 10% to 25% fragrance oil, depending on the fragrance oil and its IFRA guidance.

Use a base specifically designed for reed diffusers and test the formulation before producing larger quantities.

How do I make a room spray?

Room sprays are made by combining fragrance oil with a compatible room spray base. Some formulations may use up to 15% fragrance oil, but the correct percentage depends on the fragrance and its IFRA guidance.

Always perform stability, compatibility, and spray testing before selling the finished product.

How do I make a car air freshener?

Combine a compatible diffuser base with the appropriate amount of fragrance oil. The percentage will depend on the fragrance oil, container, and intended application.

Always review the relevant IFRA guidance and test the finished product for leakage, compatibility, and fragrance performance.

Which base should I use?

Use a base designed for the product you are making.

  • Use a room spray base for room sprays.
  • Use a reed diffuser base for reed diffusers.
  • Use a compatible diffuser base for car air fresheners.

Do not assume that one base is suitable for every application.
